Understanding hype cycles in entrepreneurship

This article by Professor Yuliya Snihur and co-authors unpacks hype as a powerful force shaping entrepreneurial journeys through distinct stages. It begins with bold framing that fuels excitement despite limited validation, often igniting collective optimism and rapid momentum. Yet, inflated expectations can backfire, triggering downturns and even stigmatization. Crucially, revival remains possible under certain conditions. By mapping key transitions and triggers, the article shows how hype can both accelerate and destabilize ventures. How can entrepreneurs harness hype without letting expectations spiral beyond control?

Book review: Unicorns, Hype, and Bubbles

In this book review, Professor Yuliya Snihur examines authour Jeffrey Funk’s critique of today’s startup landscape, where hype and weak fundamentals often drive inflated valuations. It highlights concerns that many high-growth ventures overpromise while underdelivering on productivity and profitability. At the same time, the review challenges an overly pessimistic view, arguing that hype can also mobilize resources and shape emerging markets. By bridging economic critique with recent research, it invites a more nuanced understanding of hype as both distortion and driver. When does hype mislead—and when does it enable innovation?
